[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] The invention relates to a method and machine for generating three-dimensional cams of the kind shown in Figs. 4 and 5 in which the outer surface of the body a is generated by straight lines A .... A, B .... B, whose angle to the axis b .... b varies from a positive angle # at A to a negative angle # at B so that axial movement of the cam will move a spherical follower c radially, the rate of radial movement being variable according to the angular position which the cam is given about its axis. Alternatively the follower may be moved in accordance with a function derived from the simultaneous angular and linear movements of the cam. The cam is generated in the machine by reciprocating a planing tool along a straight line path corresponding to the lines A.... A &c. and changing the angle of the said path relatively to the blank axis at each stroke, the blank being rotated intermittently about its axis between successive strokes of the tool.
