Abstract

590,640. Sporting guns. RAMSEY, A. R. J. (Harrington & Richardson Arms Co.). Dec. 10, 1943, No. 20715. [Class 119] Ejector mechanism for drop-down guns comprises a firing mechanism and a cocking rod 74 on a frame 14, the rod being moved by the firing mechanism during the latter's movement to the firing position, means on the rod for moving ejector latching means 90, Fig. 6, to an operative position during such movement, spring means 100, 102 for pressing on the ejector 104 and means on the frame for releasing the latch when the barrel is moved on the frame about the pivot 24. Such movement of the barrel serves also to reposition the cocking rod and also to compress the spring 102 prior to the release of the latch 90. The gun shown has two barrels and associated with each barrel is a firing pin 36 which is held retracted against the pressure of a spring 46 by a sear 50 pivoted at 52. When a trigger 60<1> for one barrel is pulled, it pivots about a pin 62 and lifts the front end of the sear, thereby releasing-the corresponding firing pin which then flies forwards carrying with it the upper end of a pivoted link 64 which engages in a slot of a part 48 of the pin. The link imparts the forward movement to the rod 74 whose cam surface 86, Fig. 9, engages with and lifts latch 90 about its pivot 88 and brings a shoulder 98 of the latch into the path of the sear. If now the barrels are pivoted about the pivot 24, and considering only the mechanism of the barrel from which a shot has been fired, a surface 108 will move a plunger 100 to compress the spring 102, but the spring will not actuate the extractor until the latch, which is frictionally held in its operative position, is released. This release takes place when a side lug 92 on the latch engages with a flange 82, Fig. 9, and the compressed spring is now suddenly released to effect extraction. The pivoting of the barrel also causes a cam 77, Fig. 1, to engage with and move the rod 74 to cock the firing pin. The latch of the other barrel has not been moved with the result that the pressure on plunger 100 is communicated gradually by the spring 102 to the extractor and no sudden extracting action takes place. A top lever 110, Fig. 1, when turned on a spindle 112, Fig. 9, withdraws a locking bolt 114 to allow the barrel to pivot about the frame, such turning movement of the spindle serving, by means of a cam, to operate a member 116 which acts on lever 64 and thereby serves to withdraw the point of the firing pin from the fired cartridge. A spring 125 acts through a crank on the spindle 112 and causes the bolt 114 to snap home when the barrel is in its firing position.
