Abstract

A pyrotechnic composition which is compressed during charging and before use and comprising an oxygen carrying body such as red lead and a finally divided metal such as magnesium powder formed into a paste by means of a solution of an inflammable colloid such as colophony or nitrocellulose in an organic solvent until each particle of the composition is completely moistened by the solution, is separated by screening into separate lumps and the solvent driven off by evaporation. The grains are thus coated with colloid and slide freely in the charging devices and are protected from the atmosphere. The colloid is liquefied during compression in the charging device and renders the mass fluid tight. The organic solvent is preferably anhydrated and of low boiling point.
