Abstract

589,405. Lubricating. GIRLING, Ltd., and PITT, H. W. March 21, 1945, No. 7196. [Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] For supplying lubricant at regulatable periods to parts not requiring a continuous lubricant flow a pumping plunger 12 is operated by a piston 13 moving in a cylinder 10 to one end of which cylinder a pressure fluid is continuously admitted to force back the piston against a spring pressure 15 until at the end of the stroke a communication is opened between the two ends of the cylinder through ports in the piston so that the piston is then returned by the spring pressure, the communication remaining open until the return stroke is completed; an escape port 30 at an intermediate point in the stroke and regulated by a needle valve retards the latter part of the movement so to adjust the timing between deliveries. As shown, lubricant is drawn through an intake pipe 27 and periodically discharged to points of use through a pipe 29 by the pumping plunger 12 which is operated by the piston 13 moving under the action of a pressure fluid, such as from the force-feed oil system of an internal combustion engine or from the suds pump of a machine tool, continuously admitted to one end of the cylinder by a pipe 14. The piston 13 is thus forced backwardly against the pressure of the spring 15 until an abutment 23 carried on a stem 24 causes slide valves 17 extending through the piston body to be moved to open communication between the two sides of the piston whereupon the piston returns under the action of the spring 15 to effect a discharge stroke of the pumping plunger 12, the pressure fluid meanwhile passing through the piston 13 by the slide valves and draining away through an opening 25 at the far end of the cylinder 10. At the end of this return stroke of the piston the slide valves 17 are moved to the closed position by engaging an abutment face 22. The valves 17 are latched in the open or closed position by spring clips engaging in grooves 19 at the ends of the slide valves. The device may be bolted in the crankcase of an engine to draw clean oil from the re-filling compartment, Fig. 3 (not shown), or may be mounted in a glass reservoir which thus shows the lubricant level.
