589,117. Glass - melting furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.- GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. March 21, 1945, No. 7177. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1943. Drawings to Specification. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Groups XI and XXIII] In glass-making, the batch or charge is melted in a furnace heated by gas or radiant electric heating and the molten glass is fined in the same chamber by passing a current therethrough between electrodes which are inserted in the molten glas. The electrodes are removed during the melting period and during the charging and emptying of the furnace. The electrodes may be moved when in their operative position to stir the molten glass or to vary the convection currents. Portions of the electrodes may be shrouded with refractory tubes to protect them from oxidation.
