Abstract
A plastic composition suitable for the manufacture of wall boards is made by spraying dry sawdust, wood flour, pulverized wood or wood factory waste or a mixture of these substances, with both calcium chloride and copper sulphate solutions, mixing therewith pulverous or fibrous, or pulverous and fibrous fillers up to equal proportions by weight of the wood waste, mixing in urea-formaldehyde resin in proportion from one-tenth to one-twentieth by weight of the combined fillers and wood waste and compressing the mixture at a pressure of 15-50 lbs. per square inch to provide a rigid coherent sheet. The wood waste may initially be sprayed with dilute formaldehyde and and alcohol such as methyl alcohol, and then 1 per cent. of sulphur, 1 per cent. of zinc oxide or 2 per cent. of creosote oil optionally added. The fillers may be slate dust, brick dust, sand, ash, asbestos, hair, or vegetable fibres such as jute or coir. An accelerator such as formic acid or hydrochloric acid or a hardener such as sal ammoniac may be added to the urea formaldehyde resin. The sheets may be reinforced by wires, netting, expanded metal or perforated metal sheet, and may be dyed.
