588,850. Knurling. WATTS & SON, Ltd., E. R., and DEAKIN, D. S. Jan. 5, 1945, No. 511. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] In apparatus for knurling cylindrical surfaces, a cutter 1 rotating freely on an axis inclined to that of the rotating work 2 and having helical peripheral teeth is traversed along the work to generate helical grooves 6, and a further tool 10 operates simultaneously on the grooves 6 to produce diamond or square knurls. The tool 10 may be another freely rotating cutter mounted in a holder above the cutter 1, or as shown may be a crushing roller which indents the ridges of the grooves 6 substantially at right angles thereto. The work may be traversed instead of the cutter, and the Provisional Specification states that the cutter 1 may rotate on an axis perpendicular to the work axis and may have a conical or curved surface and the grooves 6 in the work may be annular instead of helical,
