Abstract

The resistance to corrosion of stainless irons and steels is increased by treating them with a corrosive fluid having a pH value of 2-7 for such a period that the dissolution of metal effected by the metal substantially ceases and then with a dissolved oxidising agent such as potassium bichromate or permanganate or hydrogen peroxide. The first liquid may be a hot acid containing an inhibitor in which the metal is immersed for at least 1/2 hour, preferably one hour. The metal is then immersed in the hot oxidising liquid for at least 15 minutes, preferably 30-45 minutes. In an example, the metal object is immersed for at least 1/2 hour in a boiling solution, prepared by dissolving 0.930 grams of citric acid and 1.986 gms. of sodium hydrogen phosphate in 1 litre of water, removed therefrom and then immersed in a boiling bichromate solution for at least 15 minutes. One alloy which is treated contains 14 per cent. of chromium, 1.07 of carbon, 0.5 of molybdenum, 0.5 of cobalt, 0.25 of copper, 0.3 of nickel, 0.45 of manganese, 0.35 of silicon and the balance iron. Specifications 383,567 and 471,070 are referred to.
