Abstract
586,522. Rotary engines. BEST, W. G. May 23, 1944, No. 9912. [Class 110 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] Internally-meshing engines and pumps of the type shown are used in a fluid transmission with liquid or gas as the working medium. Fig. 5 shows a mechanism for driving a motor cycle and includes a pump W, driven by an engine, supplying oil to a gear X coupled to the driving wheel of the cycle. In starting up, a valve 20 is closed and a valve 19 opened so that oil circulates from a reservoir 14x, through a pipe 17 and passages to and from the pump W. The oil flow to the gear X is regulated by the opening and closing of valves 19, 20. To use the gear as a brake, the valve 19 is fully opened and 20 gradually closed. The valve port 18x is triangular in section. Figs. 9. 10, 12 show a motorvehicle driving mechanism in which gear motors drive each half-axle 23 splined to tubular extensions 24 provided on discs 25. These discs have extending teeth 10 meshing with teeth 11 on the pinions, the two motors being separated by a diaphragm 31 carrying arcuate members 32. Power is supplied by a shaft 33 to a pump Z which is connected to oil ducts 35, 36. The admission of oil, or release thereof, from the circulatory system, is controlled by a valve 38, and running control by valves 38, 39. For reversing the direction of rotation of the drive, a valve 40, Fig. 12, is turned through a right angle to disconnect through passages 41, 42. When rotated to its new position, spiral passages 43, 44 cross connect ducts 35, 36. Any means may be used to actuate the valve spindles. The invention may be applied to other drives.
