Abstract
586,216. Rotary pumps and turbines. BUTTERWORTH, A. J. Sept. 22, 1944, No. 18162. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A supercharger comprises multi-stage air compressor blades 2, 5, mounted on rings which are directly driven by rings carrying multistage exhaust turbine blades 3, 6. The blades rotate in opposite directions in annular axial flow passages for the air and exhaust. The blades 2 and further blades 4 are carried by rings 22, 24 keyed to an axial shaft carried in bearings 27, 28 mounted on spiders 7, 8 which are carried by guide vanes 12, 36 for the exhaust. The spider 8 is comprised by vanes which straighten the flow of air into a diffuser 9. The exhaust from separate cylinders may be individually led into an annular nozzle ring so that exhaust impulses have an ejector effect on one another, and produce a large pressure drop which induces a charge into the respective cylinder. The blades 3, 6 may be hollow and open at their ends so that some of the compressed air may escape through them to mix with the exhaust.
