Abstract
Polymers of dimethyl silanone having the formula [(CH3)2SiO]x, where x is at least 3 and is not more than 10 are prepared by hydrolysing a dimethyl silicon dihalide, separating the hydrolysis products from the hydrolysis medium and separating from the hydrolysis products any products which distil over at temperatures below 160 DEG C. at 20 mms. pressure. The remaining high boiling fraction which is substantially non-volatile at 200 DEG C. at 1 mm. pressure is subjected to a temperature of between 350-450 DEG C. at 760 mms. pressure to convert the high boiling polymers to low boiling polymers of the formula given above. The material so obtained is specially suitable for use as a high temperature lubricant as is described in Specification 586,189. In an example, dimethyldichlorosilane is slowly added to water at a low temperature, the oily product separated and fractionally distilled. A series of polymers from the trimer to the hexamer are separated. The residue from the fractional distillation which was substantially non-volatile at 200 DEG C. and 1 mm. pressure was heated up to 350 DEG C. at ordinary pressure and an inert gas passed through the apparatus. The products thus obtained were again fractionally distilled to separate the low-boiling distillation products which had been formed. Specification 542,655 also is referred to.
