Abstract
Liquid organo-silicon resins suitable for coating compositions and for impregnating glass fibres or asbestos sheet to form insulating materials are obtained by dissolving a mixture of silicon halides with or without silicon tetrahalides in an unsymmetrical ketone having one methyl group attached to the carbonyl group and adding the solution gradually to water to hydrolyse the halides and condense the hydrolysis products. Ketones specified are methyl ethyl ketone, methyl propyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone and methyl amyl ketone. In examples: (1) a mixture comprising 45 per cent methyldichlorsilicane and 55 per cent methyltrichlorsilicane was dissolved in 20 gs. methyl propyl ketone and the solution added slowly to 100 gs. water. Separation into layers followed and the upper layer containing the soluble liquid condensate was separated from the lower aqueous layer; (2) the solution hydrolysed comprised a mixture of methyldichlorsilicane, methyltrichlorsilicane and silicontrachloride dissolved in methyl isobutyl ketone.
