Abstract

585,257. Glass manufacture. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). Jan. 30, 1945, No. 2385. [Class 56] A hydrofluoric acid and fluoride ion resistant glass, having similar melting and working characteristics to ordinary glass, comprises 60-85 per cent phosphorus pentoxide, 10-20 per cent aluminium oxide, and one or more of the group zinc oxide, beryllium oxide and lead oxide with or without a small amount of alkali oxide or alkaline fluoride. In making the glass, P2O5 and Al2O3 which may be in the form of aluminium metaphosphate, together with the oxide or oxides above, are melted in a high grade aluminium silicate furnace at 2450-2600‹ F. and held at this temperature for several hours to produce a homogeneous structure, and slowly cooled to 2100‹ F., at which the glass can be worked by the usual methods. Examples of suitable mixtures are given in the Specification.
