Abstract
A product consisting of starch grains which will not burst, gelatinize or swell appreciably in boiling water or aqueous alkaline solution, and may therefore be used as a filling material for paints, adhesives and plastics, is made by agitating unburst starch, e.g., of wheat, rye, cassava, potato, rice or maize, at a temperature of at least 140 DEG F., preferably between 180 DEG and 200 DEG F., with formaldehyde in amount 1-15 per cent., preferably 3-10 per cent., of the dry starch, and acid, e.g., hydrochloric acid, to provide a pH of 2.5-4, there being present not more than 20 per cent. of water. Specification 522,732 is referred to.ALSO:A powder which liberates formaldehyde, particularly when damp, is made by agitating unburst starch at a temperature of at least 140 DEG F. with 1 per cent.-15 per cent. of formaldehyde and acid to provide pH 2.5-4 in the prescence of not more than 20 per cent. of water. Specification 522,732, [Group V], is referred to.
