Abstract

By heating with dehydrating agents, a -alkoxyisobutyric acid and its alkyl esters are converted into methacrylic acid or its ester with removal of the alcohol. As starting material, a solution of the a -alkoxyisobutyric acid prepared as described in Specification 578,082 may be used. In examples, methyl-a -methoxyisobutyrate is treated with phosphorus pentoxide and with oxalic acid to give methyl methacrylate. Inhibitors such as pyrogallol and tannic acid may be used. Activated alumina is specified as a dehydrating agent. Specifications 539,163 and 15735/39 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) also are referred to.
