Abstract
584,440. Control of motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., LIDDIARD, H. W. C., and PETCH, T. H. April 6, 1944, No. 6430. [Class 38 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A synchronous motor SM driving a Ward- Leonard generator G, or other variable-load generator, is provided with an exciter ME having a constantly-excited field winding MEFI and a field winding MEF2 excited from a variable-voltage exciter VVE, and a rectifier R, which may be a bridge-connected rectifier, is provided in the connection between the exciter VVE and the field winding MEF2. The exciter VVE may be driven by the motor M of the Ward-Leonard set, and the field VVEF fed from a shunt in the main generator armature circuit so that the exciter produces a voltage substantially proportional to the power output of the main generator. In order to prevent regeneration the rectifier R passes current only in the sense that the field MEF2 strengthens the effect of the field MEF1. With a bridge-connected rectifier the cumulative effect of the two fields is preserved when the main current reverses.
