583,584. Gravity-separation apparatus. LAWSON, A., and YOUNG, C. M. Nov. 6, 1944, No. 21752. Convention date, March 1. [Class 46] Apparatus for separating liquids of different specific gravities comprises a housing 10, shown as cylindrical, within which are arranged foraminous bodies 16 of substantial thickness which divide the housing into separate compartments, the mixture of liquids being supplied through an inlet 22, one of the liquids being drawn off at the bottom through a pipe 24 and the other liquid being drawn off at the top through branches 30, 31, 32 of a pipe 28. The foraminous bodies consist of layers of knitted metallic mesh secured between perforated walls 20. A baffle 23 deflects the mixed liquids laterally as they enter the housing. A steam pipe 33 is provided whereby the liquid may be churned up by steam to clean the foraminous bodies 16. A sight gauge 27 indicates the line of division between the separated liquids.
