Abstract
582,733. Coiling ropes &c. INTERTYPE Ltd. March 23, 1944, No. 5451. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1943. [Class 109] [Also in Group XXI] A cable is fired into the air as a protection against aircraft by firing a projectile to which the end of the cable is attached, the cable being mounted on a base and coiled into concentric layers spaced apart to provide a free passage of the cable as it is paid out from the inner to the outer layers and from the top to the bottom of each layer. The projectile, with the cable secured to an eye, is discharged from a gun around the barrel of which is a cage-like structure comprising a base 7 with spaced circular rows of pins 60 around which the cable is coiled. The cable is given a number of incomplete turns, back and forth on the central member 6 to prevent a sudden tension on the cable on firing ; the cable is then coiled, from top to bottom, on the innermost set of pins and so on to the remaining sets. To eounteract the twist given to the cable during the initial period while the reel is picking up its rotational movement the cable on the inner coil is wound with a reverse twist.
