Abstract

582,706. Steam traps ; thermostats. HEDGELAND, F. G. Feb. 12, 1942, No. 1894. [Class 64 (ii)] A thermostatically controlled steam trap comprises a vessel 1 having a central boss 3 surrounding the outlet, and an inlet connection 5. A tubular element 7 and a valve seat 6 are screwed into the boss 4a of the cover plate 4 and the boss 3 respectively. A symmetrical bowed bimetal element 8 is clamped beneath a shoulder on the tube 7 by means of a nut 7b, the free ends 8a of element 8 making tangental frictional contact with a neck 9a in the spindle 9, and thereby supporting it, so that contraction of element 8 causes the spindle 9 to rise within the tube 7 and so open the valve 10, while simultaneously rotating spindle 9 to make the valve self-cleaning. In a modification, the ends 8a of the bimetal element 8 are in the same vertical plane, so that contraction of element 8 causes axial displacement only.
