Abstract

582,036. Centrifugal pumps. LEWIS, T. M., ROUNCE, E. G., and HILLS, A. E. July 7, 1944, No. 13032. [Class 110 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] A squirrel cage induction motor has radial fluid passages 2 in its rotor 1, Fig. 1, so that it acts as the impeller of a centrifugal pump delivering fluid from fixed axial supply branches 4, 5, through a perforated hollow shaft 3 on which the rotor is secured. The stator of the machine has radial or curved apertures 7 through which the fluid passes to a volute 8. A modification, Fig. 2, employs a double plate rotor 11 similarly mounted on a hollow shaft and having radial passages 17 to the surrounding volute 20. Two sets of laminations 16, with shorting bars 17 are set in annular recesses in the body of the rotor. The stator laminations 12 are similarly fixed. In each modification the rotor floats hydraulically within the stator so that the duty on the bearings is reduced to a minimum.
