Abstract
582,030. Cranes for motor vehicles. DUNKERLEY, W. June 19, 1944, No. 11656. [Class 78 (iii)] A motor vehicle for use on rail or road is provided with a load lifting appliance supported below the vehicle floor so that the capacity of the loading space is not diminished when the vehicle is used as a lorry or truck. The load lifting appliance consists of a hook H carried by arms F<1>, F<2> pivoted to brackets G<1> G<2> secured to bearers A<1>, A<2> of channel or I-section disposed beneath the floor boards of a vehicle. The arms F<1>, F<2> are connected by links E5, E<6> to a carriage E<1>, provided with rollers E<2> E<3>, and the arms are raised or lowered by the ram D<1> of a hydraulic cylinder D which traverses the carriage along the bearers. The base of the cylinder D bears against a transverse beam C. When in the inoperative position the hook H may be removed from the horn or secured to the chassis J. A mechanical lock may be fitted to the ram and engaged when it is fully extended, and the controls for the ram, which may be operated by an engine-driven pump, are at the rear of the vehicle. In modified constructions (1) the brackets G<1>, G<2> on which the arms F<1>, F<2> are pivoted are mounted on a travelling carriage which is traversed by the ram and one or more links connect the arms F<1>, F<2> to a fixed pivot on the bearers, (2) the arms are lifted about fixed pivots by a vertical or inclined ram having the cylinder pivoted to the bearers and the piston to a cross member joining the arms, and (3) the arms may be raised or lowered by a screw and nut.
