Abstract

581,889. Releasing bombs from aircraft. KERR, P. S. Jan. 1, 1942, No. 3. [Class 9 (ii)] Release mechanism for carrying bombs in aircraft comprises two opposed hooked levers 6, 7, having coacting portions shaped to receive an eye on the bomb and having extensions to which are pivoted two links 13, 14 of a togglelever, the common pivot of which 15 is connected by a further toggle-lever 17, 18 to a fixed point 20 on the hook casing, the common pivot 19 of the second toggle-lever being connected by a connecting rod 21 to a,spring- rotated release plate 23. A spring 24 is always acting to rotate the plate to release position, but the plate is held in the holding position by a spring-actuated catch 26, an extension 29 of which is adapted to be pulled towards an electromagnet 30, 31 when this is energized by the operator. The connecting rod is connected to the disc at 22 which lies in line with the connecting rod and the centre of the disc in the holding position and constitutes a virtual third toggle-lever to lock the system. A handoperated spring-tester 40 is provided for ascertaining that the spring retaining catch is engaged with the disc. After release, the disc may be rotated to holding position again by a hand lever 50, Fig. 3, with an extension 52 engaging a projection 22 on the disc to rotate it and projections 60, 70 on the jaws may be engaged by the eye of the bomb being positioned to aid the rotation of the disc. In a modification, Fig. 4, the release may be effected mechanically by an arm 71 pivotally mounted on the disc pivot and actuated by a link 77 and in this case a pin 72 is provided on the lever to actuate positively the catch 26 for release and the pin 22 on the disc is engaged by the arm so that the disc is positively rotated also. The disc, in this case, may be returned to gripping position by lever gear 62, 63, 64 actuated from the jaw 6 through a projection 61 on the jaw being engaged by the eye of the bomb being positioned.
