Abstract

581,247. Exhaust silencers. HEATHER, F. June 19, 1944, No. 11649. [Class 7 (ii)] In an exhaust silencer which also arrests sparks and flames, an expansion chamber 1 is lined with sound absorbing material and the gas enters through a perforated or reticulated tubular member 6 closed at one end by a plate 10 and arranged so that the gas streams flow over the sound absorbing covering which may comprise asbestos rope 3 wound on a perforated or reticulated tube 2. The outlet may comprise a chamber similar to the chamber 1 but inverted, the two being connected by conical members 14 and a perforated or reticulated tube 13 surrounded by helically wound asbestos rope 16, longitudinally extending turns 17 of the rope being - also wound round two spiders 18. ThÚ gases may enter the tube 13 direct as shown dotted, the first expansion chamber being omitted.
