Abstract
581,112. Transformers. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 15, 1944, No. 25193. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1943. [Class 38 (ii)] In order to improve the initial voltage distribution under surge conditions in apparatus such as a transformer, a continuous winding is arranged in a number of sections of several disc-type coaxial coils, the turns of which continue in sequence through the layers from one end of the section to the other and back again with gradually changing diameters, the outer turn of at least the line end section being a ribbon-like conductor wide enough to extend round the edges of all the turns of that section. Fig. 7 shows two sections each of three disclike coils of a high-voltage winding of a' transformer surrounding a low-voltage winding 32 and a core 31. A high-voltage line 51 is connected to an outer turn 22 which is sufficiently wide to surround the whole section No. 1 and slots 63, 64 through which cooling oil may circulate between the layers which are separated by radial insulating spacers having ends terminating at 61, 62 on the inner side of turn 22. The turn sequence as shown by the numbering is so arranged that the voltage between adjacent layers is small, though that between sections is greater and wider spacing is arranged there. The wide outer turn 22 may be provided around all sections, Fig. 4 (not shown), or only about the line section or sections.
