580,135. Milling. JACK & HEINTZ RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 18, 1944, No. 9587. Convention date, April 1, 1943. [Class 83 (iii)] A work-supporting and indexing device for a milling-machine comprises an index-plate and work-holder rotatably mounted on a base by means of a shaft slidable in the base and supporting the index-plate, complementary pin and recess means for aligning and indexing the work and means for clamping the index-plate to the base. A vertical shaft 2 is slidably mounted in a base 1 and between a shoulder 4 and nut 5 on the shaft is clamped an indexing- plate 3. formed on its underside with two or more circular recesses 14 and 15 adapted to co-operate with the projecting heads 18 and 20 of pins carried by the base, the engagement of the pin heads and recesses serving to index the work. A work-holder 7 is bolted to the plate 3 and is also keyed to it at 33 and is provided with recesses to receive the work, which as shown comprises pins 8 and 9 to be slotted by a milling-cutter 12. The pins are held by clamps 11 and nuts 10. A horizontal shaft 23 mounted in the base so as to be rotatable by a manually operable lever (not shown) has at its inner end a cam 25 engaging within a recess in the shaft 2. By turning the lever, the shaft 2 may be raised so that the indexing- plate is clear of the pin heads 18, 20 and after indexing, may be lowered to clamp the plate 3 in position.
