Abstract

580,046. Ratchet gearing; stopping and starting machinery. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and FIELDING, E. C. Feb. 3, 1944, No. 1977. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XL] Ratchet gearing, particularly applicable to the remote control of radio equipment in aircraft where a positive drive for tuning devices, wavechange switches and the like is desired, comprises a high-speed driving shaft 11 on which is fixed an eccentric cam 13 engaging a follower 14 pivoted at 15. Riveted to the upper surface of the follower is a substantially L-shaped spring steel strip 16 one end of which is extended rearwardly to engage a stop 17 to keep the follower in contact with the cam, the other end being bent at right angles to form a pawl which engages a ratchet wheel 18 on the low-speed driven shaft 12. The wheel is stepped round by the length of one tooth for every revolution of the cam. A spring detent 19 prevents backward movement. The mechanism to be driven may be connected to the shaft 12 directly or through gearing. To enable the drive to be engageable and disengageable at will, an electromagnet 22 has an armature 23 the free end of which lies under the free end of the follower 14. The armature is normally raised by a strong spring 24 to lift the follower out of contact with the cam and stop the drive. To restore the drive, the magnet is energized to pull down the armature and free the follower. When the drive ceases, the pawl is jammed between the teeth and a stop 25. In a modification, the armature 23 receives the pressure of the rocker 14 endwise.
