Abstract

579,873. Modulating apparatus; directive wireless systems. STANDARD . TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WILLOUGHBY, E. O. April 21, 1944, No. 7479. [Class 40 (v)] A feed line is coupled alternately to two transmission lines by coupling-reactances, and screening means are provided to prevent adventitious coupling. The system is particularly intended for use in blind approach beacon systems for aircraft. The feed line T has its inner conductor connected to a channel-section block P2 and the respective transmission lines A1, A2 are similarly connected to blocks P1, P3. A rotary shaft S carries a circular disc D2 co-operating with the block P2, and two sectorshaped .complementary discs D1, D3 co-operating respectively with the blocks P1, P3, so that energy is alternately conveyed to the lines A1, A2 through the capacities formed by the blocks and discs. Adventitious coupling between the blocks is reduced by interposing screens S12, S23 between the blocks, thus dividing the con. tainer K into three compartments. The lines T, A1, A2, terminate in matching stubs M1, M2, M3 closed by adjustable short-circuiting discs. The shaft S runs in bearings at the end of tubular casings K1, K2 connected to the main casing K. The shaft forms with each casing K1, K2 a short coaxial line adjustable in length by shortcircuiting discs L1, L2. In a modified arrangement, the interposed screens S12, S23 are replaced by channel-shaped screens surrounding the blocks P1, P2, P3, Fig. 5 (not shown).
