[Classes. 96 and 140] [Also in Groups X and XXI] Cellular sheet material of low density suitablefor aircraft. construction is made by forming tubes from strips of paper, linen &c. impregnated first with a thermosetting synthetic. resin which is partly cured, then with a thermoplastic. synthetic resin, such as a polyvinyl compound, assembling the tubes and bonding them together, and heating to complete the curing of the thermosetting synthetic resin. The tubes may be formed by applying the strip longitudinally on a mandrel. and overlapping. the edges, or by winding, two strips helically around a mandrel in the same or opposite directions, the overlapping. portions of the strips being sealed by pressure, aided by heat, a solvent, or a further coating of thermoplastic material. The tubes may be bonded into a block B, Fig. 6, by thermoplastic material applied along their contacting surfaces. Slices cut from such a block may be faced with sheets e, Fig. 9, of plywood, plastic or metal sheets, paper, or linen sealing. the ends of the tubes and secured by thermoplastic material or a cold-setting adhesive: A block suitable as a float may be built up by applying to one of the covering sheets e another slice of tube sections, another sheet e, and repeating the process until the desired thickness is attained. Tubes of different diameters may be used, e.g., the middle components of an assembly may be of larger diameter. Phenol-formaldehyde thermosetting. resin may be used, and the polyvinyl resin may comprise polyvinyl acetate dissolved in a mixture of tricresyl phosphate, toluene, xylene, methylated spirit, and isopropyl alcohol, with optional additions of butyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone.
