Abstract
578,374. Sulphuric acid ; sulphur dioxide. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION. June 1, 1943, No. 8762. Convention date, June 12, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (if)] [Also in Groups XI and XII] Waste or bye-product sulphuric acid is regenerated by commingling the sulphuric acid of at least 80 per cent. concentration in the form of a vapour or finely divided spray with the flame of a burning mixture of a hydrocarbon and air preheated to at least 800‹F., maintaining the acid in the combustion zone under oxidizing conditions at temperatures of at least 1600‹F. until it is substantially completely decomposed into a mixture of sulphur dioxide, oxygen and water vapour, cooling the resulting gas mixture and removing water therefrom, catalytically oxidizing the sulphur dioxide therein to sulphur trioxide with a conventional contact catalyst, and absorbing the sulphur trioxide in strong sulphuric acid. The hydrocarbon may be burned as a cone of flame, a stream of finely divided sulphuric acid being injected into the cone. Alternatively, the sulphuric acid may be vaporised to the stream of hot air which has been preheated by heat exchange with the hot gases of the combustion zone or may be introduced in admixture with the hydrocarbon fuel; or combustion step may be effected in apparatus in which the sulphuric acid is spraved into the furnace through a nozzle mounted just below the centre of a ring type burner introducing the hydrocarbon gas, air preheated by heat exchange with the products of combustion being introduced around the ring burner (see Group XII). According to another modification jets of sulphuric acid and hydrocarbon oil are injected from opposite sides of the furnace, preheated air being introduced through a 'multiplicity of ducts in the wall of the furnace. A burner may be employed comprising three concentric pipes for the introduction of sulphuric acid, fuel oil and steam respectively (see Group XI).
