Abstract
A medicated gauze is prepared by impregnating a gauze material with a sulphonamide in a vehicle comprising a glycol, e.g., ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or polymerized glycols such as carbowaxes. Suitable sulphonamides include sulphadiazine, sulphapyridine and sulphaguanidine. According to examples, (1) a mixture of carbowax 1500, duponol (a sulphonated ester of higher aliphatic alcohols), sulphanilamide and sulphathiazole is applied by passing a gauze through the material and then spreading it evenly by means of a double knife arrangement; (2) a mixture of glyceryl monostearate, cetyl alcohol, glycerin, diethylene glycol and sulphathiazole is applied to a gauze in the same manner as example (1), (3) a gauze is immersed in an aqueous solution of sodium sulphathiazole and ethylene glycol and/or other glycols or polymerized glycols, excess liquid is wrung out and the impregnated gauze is stored either wet or after drying or partially drying; (4) a gauze is immersed in an aqueous colloidal suspension containing sulphonamide, sulphathiazole, duponol, methylcellulose and propylene glycol and further treated as in example (3). The methyl cellulose in the last example may be replaced by vegetable gums, starches, syrups, honey sugars or other water-soluble or water-dispersible cellulosic compounds. Other permissible additions to the vehicle include zinc peroxide, benzoyl peroxide urea, allantoin, and ascorbic acid.
