578,104. Apparatus for setting tubular rivets. AVIATION DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., and SPOONER, R. A. W. March 22, 1944, No. 5321. [Class 43] Two pivoted jaw members of a "gun" for expanding the ends of tubular rivets are mounted at the nose so as to be slid between two positions, in one of which, into which they are urged by spring action, they may be opened by the leading rivet, and in the other of which they are positively held closed, moved into such position by the pressure applied axially of the gun during the actual setting operation, when the jaws serve as an anvil. In the form shown, the jaw members 22, 23, Figs. 1, 3, are held in a housing 27 screwed at 8 to the forward end of the barrel 7 of the "gun." Balls 30 seated in hemi-spherical recesses in their adjacent faces form the pivots about which they move. Tails 28 on the jaws project within the housing 27 to contact a flange on the forward end of a cup 32, the rearward face of the flange contacting a spring 31 the forward end of which bears on a flange 96 of a tube 33, which forms a guide for rivets 12 mounted on a mandrel 9 having an enlarged setting head 24. When the jaws 22, 23 are pressed against the head 21 of a rivet inserted in two pieces 92, 93 of material to be united, and hydraulic pressure fluid is admitted to the space 16 behind a piston 14 mounted on the barrel 7 and within the casing 1 of tne gun, to produce relative longitudinal movement between the barrel 7 and casing 1, to draw the head 24 through the leading rivet 12 in the work, the spring 31 is compressed and shoulders 29, between spherical-shaped faces 25 on the jaws 22, 23 and the tails 28, are held by the forward end 29 of the casing 27 and prevented from pivoted movement. When such pressure is released after the rivet has been set, the spring 31 pushes the jaws 22, 23 forwards into a position where the head of the leading rivet, by contact with the inner bevelled face 24 of the jaws, may pivot them apart, about a point on the line joining the balls 30, to compress the spring 31 somewhat by the tails 28 and to permit the leading rivet to pass through. The jaws 22, 23 are then reclosed by reaction of the spring 31 against the cup 32 and tails 28. The hydraulic operation of the "gun" is described in Specification 578,105, the tail chuck 10 by which the rear end of the mandrel 9 is gripped and held relatively to the "gun" casing in Specification 578,106, and the device 13 by which the rivets are fed in Specification 578,107.
