Abstract
Vulcanized rubber is regenerated by reducing it to finely-divided form and then subjecting it to mechanical treatment in the presence of a softening-agent, a peptising-agent, and an organic acid. The vulcanized rubber is first reduced to a fine crumb by passing through grinding-rolls having a high differential speed ratio; the organic acid (benzoic acid or one of its substituted derivatives such as o-, m- or p-nitrobenzoic acid, the dinitrobenzoic acids or a halogen-substituted benzoic acid) and a neutral softening-agent (of hydroxylic or oxygen-containing character such as pine tar, pine oil, or coumarone resin) are added, the product being milled for a short period between rolls having a tight nip and a small differential speed ratio; the peptising-agent (an organic compound containing a mercapto group such as mercaptobenzthiazole or a - or b -naphthyl mercaptan) is then added, and the mixture subjected to mechanical working until a coherent sheet results. The temperature is preferably maintained below 60 DEG C. at least until the agents have been incorporated, when the mix may be raised to at least 100 DEG C. and the working continued for a further period. Suitable proportions are 0.5-3 per cent of acid, 2-10 per cent of softener, and 0.25-2 per cent of peptising-agent by weight of the vulcanized rubber.
