Abstract

Textiles composed of silk, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or fibre-forming synthetic linear polyamides are delustred by impregnating them with an aqueous solution of a cationic surface-active agent, squeezing, immersing in an aqueous dispersion of a polymer or interpolymer of methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, or styrene made with the aid of an anionic surface-active agent, again squeezing, and drying. For the first immersion in the cationic surface-active agent, the temperature is preferably maintained between 40 DEG C. and 70 DEG C., and the time of immersion in each bath is conveniently 10 minutes. The cationic surface-active agent may be ethyloxymethylpyridinium chloride or similar bodies, the quaternary salts described in Specifications 471,130, 475,119, 475,170, 488,869, 492,699, 497,856, 498,287, 517,474, 517,631 and 517,632, long-chain aliphatic isothiouronium compounds, hydrohalides of substituted isothioureas, or compounds obtained by combining higher aliphatic amides, carbamates, nitriles or acylated ureas with formaldehyde and a hydrogen halide or with a : a 1-dihalogeno-dimethyl ether and subsequently exchanging at least one halogen atom of the condensation product so formed for a watersolubilising group by treatment with dicyan-diamide as described in Specifications 507,207, 511,144, 524,068, 527,012 and 537,221. Titanium dioxide, lithopone, barium sulphate or zinc sulphide may also be added to the resin dispersion. In one example, 20 parts of viscose rayon fabric are soaked in 100 parts of a cold solution containing 0.2 part of the quaternary ammonium salt made according to example 2 of Specification 517,632. The fabric is then squeezed so that it contains its own weight of liquor and soaked in an emulsion made by adding to 1000 parts of water, 5 parts of a 30 per cent aqueous emulsion obtained by mixing 60 parts of methyl methacrylate with 40 parts of dibutyl phthalate and emulsifying and polymerizing in presence of oleyl sulphate and ammonium persulphate. In other examples, emulsions of vinyl chloride and of styrene are polymerized in the presence of the sodium salt of sulphonated oleic acid and ammonium persulphate, sodium sulphite being also present and the operation being carried out in the presence of nitrogen in the case of styrene, as described in Specification 577,317.
