Abstract

576,956. Thickness gauges. SEE FABRIKS AKTIEBOLAG. March 15, 1944, No. 4848. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1943. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for measuring, the thickness of material at points difficult of access, for example at different points of a tube or plate, comprises feeling members located opposite to one another by a firmly stretched wire or rod subjected to tension, the arrangement of the supports &c. being such as to permit relative movement between the article and the feeling members. The adjustment of the feelers may be effected automatically. When the point of measurement is touched by both feelers, an electric circuit may be closed to give a sound or light signal and to operate a device for locking the measuring-instrument. Fig. 1 shows a tube a located for thickness tests between a feeler and secured to a stretched wire or rod 4 on a frame 1, and a feeler 7 guided in the frame 1 so as to operate by its displacement an indicator 8, contact across the tube a serving to complete a circuit for a light signal 13. In a modification, Fig. 3, the feelers 17 are pivoted to clamps 16 on two parallel wires subjected to tension by hydraulically operated pistons. Sleeves 18 slidable on the wires 4 are displaced by the feelers to actuate an indicator 20. A duplicate outfit may be provided where the tube is long. Continuous recording-instruments of known type may be incorporated. Either the wires or the tube may be arranged to be movable. Alternatively, both wires and tube may be stationary, and the clamps 16 mounted so as to be slidable along the wires 4, the members 16 and the indicator 20 being connected to wires slidable in grooves in the wires 4. Tubes of great length may 'be supported on a series of holders 46, Figs. 9 and 10, adapted to be independently adjustable in height by set-screws 41 positioning about a shaft 39 pivoted arms 40 which engage sliding pins 44 guided in heads 45 on arms 38. An adjustable counterweight 49 is set so that the tube a rests with slight pressure only against the feeler contact 34 on the steel wire 33. The inter-connected carriages 36 for the tube supports 46 have rollers 35 running on parallel rods 32. Under the tube a opposite the stationary feeler contact 34 is a second contact adjusted by a micrometer screw 55, 56, serving as the measuring instrument, an electromagnet 57 locking the micrometer on closure of the circuit. When the tube is not an electric conductor, adjustment of the micrometer may cause the tube to close a switch 64 connecting wires 33, 60, Figs. 12 and 13.
