Abstract
In the production of rubber articles direct from dispersions, a "zinc amino complex" formed by dissolving zinc hydroxide or carbonate in ammonia, is added to stabilized latex, the amount of complex and stabilizing agent present being adjusted so that the latex thickens, but does not coagulate until the forming operation is complete. 1-10 per cent of the complex may be added depending on the amount of thickening desired. In the case of commercial ammonia-preserved latex, the ammonia is preferably removed to enable the amount of stabilizer present to be controlled. A suitable mix for making gloves consists of 160 parts by weight of latex of 60 per cent dry rubber content free from ammonia, 2 parts of sulphur, 0.5 parts of zinc oxide, 1 part accelerator, 5 parts mineral oil, 1 part antioxidant, 0.8 parts potassium oleate, and 12 parts of zinc amino complex made by dissolving 1 part zinc carbonate in 3 parts .880 ammonia. Formers are dipped and dried for 1-15 min., and the dipping is repeated. The thickened latex may also be coagulated by heat, e.g. by extrusion through hot nozzles.
