Abstract
Saturated hydrocarbons suitable for use as motor fuels are prepared by passing tertiary hydrocarbons, olefins, and an alkylating catalyst into the bottom of a reaction zone which is maintained under alkylating conditions, withdrawing from the top of the reaction zone a stream comprising alkylated products which are recovered, e.g. by distillation, withdrawing from an intermediate point in the reaction zone a stream comprising hydrocarbons and alkylating catalysts, and recycling the latter stream to the bottom of the reaction zone along with fresh feed. The catalyst may be sulphuric acid, a halogenated sulphuric acid, an acid of phosphorus, an aqueous solution of boron fluoride, a metal halide, an activated clay, &c. The acid withdrawn from the top of the reaction zone along with the alkylated products may be recycled to the bottom of the reaction zone.
