Abstract
1 : 5-Pentanediol is prepared by treating d -hydroxyvaleric aldehyde or its isomer 1 : 5-epoxy pentanol-5 with hydrogen at elevated temperatures and/or pressures in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst. The reaction may be carried out in the liquid phase and in the presence of water. Suitable catalysts are the metals of group VIII or copper which may be supported on an inert carrier. In the examples, hydrogen, d -hydroxyvaleric aldehyde and a nickel on kieselguhr catalyst are reacted together (1) in the absence of water, (2) with water, to give 1 : 5-pentanediol, with some dihydropyran. d -Hydroxyvaleric aldehyde is prepared by hydrating dihydropyran in the presence of a mineral acid.
