Abstract
Concrete roads are made by laying stone on a bed to a height slightly greater than that finally required and applying grout to a level below the surface of the stone, but sufficient to rise to the surface of the stone and form a surface dressing when the stone is consolidated by rolling on tamping. The amount of grout used is sufficient to fill the voids in the stone if they amounted to 30 per cent instead of the usual 45 per cent. When only small stones are to be used, these are built up into ridges across the base surface, grout is placed in the intermediate sections, and the stones are spread over the grout until the desired height is obtained. Specification 412,556 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, a base of large stones is laid to a lower level than the desired finished surface, grout is applied to fill the voids, and smaller stone is then scattered over the surface and tamped in.
