[Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a shaft mounting, particularly for gyro rotors, the shaft bearings are kept correctly spaced in spite of temperature changes, by means of a strut which passes through an axial bore in the shaft and holds the bearings spaced against inwardly-directed forces, the strut being of the same material as the shaft or of a material having substantially the same coefficient of expansion. As shown in connection with a directional gyroscope, the rotor shaft 20 is hollow and is supported in ball-bearing housings 15, 15<1> screwed into a frame 10. Adjustable pins 24, 24<1> are carried by the housings and compressively engage a strut 23 passing through the hollow. rotor shaft; the pressure exerted by the pins being sufficient to spring the sides of the frame 10 outwardly irrespective of the expansive effects of temperature. The hollow shaft and the strut are made of materials having the same coefficient of expansion and are of the same length so that the spacing of the bearings is correctly maintained in spite of temperature changes. In a modification applied to a gyro vertical, the lower end of the strut rests on a jewel post, and the compressive force on the strut is applied at the upper end by a screwed pin which also carries the balancing weights of the gyro.
