Abstract
574,221. Gun mountings. MOTLEY, L. July 30, 1942, No. 10668. [Class 92 (i)] In a gun mounting, such as described in Specification 573,979, in which a plurality of guns, spaced apart laterally, are adapted to be traversed. in unison about individual axes relative to a support, which is also adapted to be traversed relative to a fixed base, the training movement of the guns automatically operates an electric, or fluid-pressure, motor, for rotating the support to follow up the guns until the normal relative position is restored. As shown, gun arms 2 with operating handles 4 are interconnected for movement in unison about parallel training axes L-L and for simultaneous elevation about a common axis M on a seat 1 for the gunner carried by a shaft 24 connected with the motor 13, or 37, on the underside of the base 26, through a one-way transmission, such as a worm wheel 27 and a worm 28, for preventing rotation of the support if one of the guns should misfire. In the case of an electric motor 13, a contact arm 21 is moved by piiis 29 with one of the arms 2 over resistances 22, 23 on the underside of a hooded plate 30 to operate the motor in one direction or the other, the speed of the motor increasing with the length of resistance in circuit. One terminal 14 of the motor is connected through the supply source and a slip ring 32 to the arm 21 and the terminals 18, 19 through slip rings 35, 36 to the outer ends of the resistances respectively, the leads from the slip rings passing through the shaft 24. In the case of a fluid-pressure motor 37, a reversing valve 50, Fig. 9, for supplying the motor from a source of constant fluid pressure may be operated through a link 49 and a bell-crank lever 48, Fig. 8, having, a bifurcated arm 46 terminating in rollers 45 engaging a groove 44 on a sleeve 41 connected by a pin 42 with one of the runs of a cable 39 passing over a pulley 40 and connected at its ends to one of the gun arms 2. The cable 39 passes through Bowden casings 52 secured to arms 53. Alternatively, the motor 37 may be operated by a continuously driven variable-stroke reversing pump connected with the bell-crank lever 48. In either case, the speed of the motor increases with the movement of the guns from the normal relative position. The seat 1 may be replaced by a turret. The guns may be traversed and elevated by respective prime movers, such as hydraulic rams controlled by levers.
