Abstract
Natural substances having vitamin E activity such as wheat germ oil concentrates are esterified with lower fatty acids, the product being then fractionated by high vacuum distillation to concentrate the esterified vitamin E. In examples: (1) the unsaponifiable portion of wheat germ oil is esterified with acetic anhydride and sodium acetate and after removal of the excess acetylating agent the sterol esters are precipitated by adding solvents such as methyl alcohol, acetone or petroleum ether, and the remaining solution is distilled under high vacuum; (2) the unsaponifiable portion of cotton seed oil is dissolved in pyridine and heated with butyric anhydride, the reaction product being treated as above.
