Abstract
572,934. Steering motor vehicles. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd., BRIGGS, T. H., and BRIGGS, W. H. Sept. 16, 1943, No. 15200. [Class 79 (v)] Power steering-gear comprises a driving shaft a operable by a hand wheel h or the like, and having a helical connection at i with a co-axial driven shaft b connected by any suitable steering gear c and the usual rock-shaft d to the steerable wheels (not shown), powerdriven oppositely-rotating wheels j, k mounted loosely on the shaft b, and friction clutch members n, o, p whereby rotation of the driving shaft a in one direction or the other causes one of the wheels j, k to be driven and the shaft b driven in the same direction as the shaft a. In the construction shown the shaft a is formed as a sleeve nut engaging a screw thread i on the shaft b, and the three clutch members n, o, p are splined on the shaft b, the member o having a recess t engaged by a flange s on the shaft a, so that when this shaft is rotated it moves axially along shaft b and causes either the wheel j or k to be gripped between the clutch member o and either n or p, the shaft b being therefore driven by j or k. The wheels j, k are driven in opposite directions by intermeshing pinions m, m driven through a shaft u either by the vehicle engine or by an electric or fluid-pressure motor. If the power fails the shaft a drives the shaft b directly. Any reaction by the road wheels tends to tighten the grip on one of the clutch wheels j, k and oppose a frictional resistance to this reaction.
