Abstract
A composition suitable for use as a size for regenerated cellulose yarns comprises a "methacrylic polymer," polymerized ethylene oxide and a wetting agent. By "methacrylic polymer" is meant a polymer of methacrylic acid, or a copolymer of methacrylic acid with acrylic acid or with a small proportion of styrene, vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate, or a salt of such a polymer, e.g. a sodium salt of polymethacrylic acid. Preferably, the polyethylene oxide has a molar wt. of about 1500 to 4000. Specified wetting agents are the sodium or amine salts of lauryl sulphate, or other higher primary or secondary alkyl sulphate, the diamyl, dihexyl, dibutyl or other dialkyl esters of sodium sulphosuccinic acid, sodium alkyl aryl sulphonates or wetting agents such as the sodium sulpho-ethyl amide of oleic acid. Preferred sizes comprise 1-10 per cent by weight of the "methacrylic polymer," 0.2-5.0 per cent of polyethylene oxide and 0.01-1.0 per cent of wetting agent, the remainder being water. The invention also includes textile materials obtained by saponification of cellulose organic esters and sized with the above composition.
