Abstract
572,703. Coating iron and steel. SAMUEL, R. L. May 24, 1941, No. 6669. [Class 82 (ii)] Chromium coatings are produced on iron and steel articles by heating the latter to 550- 1250‹ C., preferably between 700‹ C. and 1050‹ C., in an atmosphere of hydrogen or other inert gas with or in contact with an agent prepared by impregnating a porous heat-resisting substance with a solution of a highly-soluble sodium, potassium, or ammonium salt of chromium or of chromic acid and then reducing it by heating with a hydrogen halide at an elevated temperature. The porous heat-resisting substance may consist of fragments of porcelain, ceramic, pottery, earthenware or slag. In an example, dried fragments of ceramic were poured into a hot saturated solution of potassium bichromate. After the solution had cooled, the impregnated ceramic was removed therefrom, dried and introduced into the heating chamber of a furnace and a stream of hydrogen at 850-950‹ C. passed through. Then a stream of hydrogen chloride at the same temperature was passed through the material resulting in the formation of a homogeneous layer containing complex chlorides of potassium and chromium. The. ceramic thus prepared was introduced into a furnace, together with a small proportion of carbon-free ferro-chromium and a number of small steel bolts. The furnace was then heated to 900‹ C. and hydrogen passed through at temperature for 3 hours. Instead of hydrogen, other inert gases such as acetylene or coal gas may be used. Specification 516,260 is referred to.
