572,393. Roads and pavements. SMITH, L. D., and PALMER, E. W. Aug. 23, 1943, No. 13705. [Classes 87 (i) and 107] A road or pavement comprises a concrete foundation A, reinforced or not, an intermediate layer B of steel mesh centering, the transverse wires of the latter being heavier than the longitudinal wires and welded thereto at the intersections, and an upper layer of precast' concrete blocks C, D, with grooves on their lower faces to accommodate the centering. At the edge of the foundation, a cavity E is left to receive the cranked ends of the centering, the cavity being then filled with concrete to form a step A<1> on which the thinner blocks D are laid; similar steps are formed at intervals parallel with and transversely to the length of the road &c. Each block comprises two superimposed layers, the lower layer preferably being formed of four parts of crushed granite to one of cement and water, and the upper layer of three parts of steel filings or sawings, three parts of crushed quartz or granite dust or a mixture thereof, and two parts of cement and water; a hardener such as silicate of soda may be added to 'the cement. The lower and side faces of the blocks. C are coated with bitumen before laying, preferably by means of a wire platform supported by springs, and after laying, the joints are filled with hot bitumen; the blocks D are laid on rapid hardening cement mortar grout. The,upper edges of the blocks are chamfered.
