Abstract
Grain or pulses are protected from insects by incorporating therewith say 0.05 to 0.5 per cent. of g -alumina prepared from a solution of sodium aluminate by precipitation with sodium bicarbonate or by dilution, separating and washing the precipitate, and drying and activating by heating to 250-500 DEG C for 24-2 hrs., the alumina being pulverised before or after activation to a particle size substantially below 10 microns. Conditions of precipitation are preferably such that the precipitate is neither gelatinous nor in coarse crystal form, as in the former case hard lumps are obtained after activation, whereas from a granular compact form of precipitate in which the individual crystals are less than 5-10 microns soft chalky lumps are obtained which are readily pulverised. Precipitation is preferably effected with vigorous stirring in the presence of seeds at 30-60 DEG C and extended over 1-24 hours. Pulverising after activation may be carried out in some cases by wet ball milling for at least 20 hours, followed by redrying and crushing. Activation may be carried out in a current of hot air. Examples of preparation under different conditions are given. Specification 554,889, [Group III], is referred to. A statement of the art refers to the prior use of final ground corundum and bauxite for protecting grain, about 1 per cent. of the mineral dust being used. According to the Provisional Specification, any finely divided powdered "prepared" alumina may be used, either in the form of boehmite (A1OOH) or as g -alumina, and may, if desired, be obtained from an aluminium salt by adding alkali. The precipitate may be heated to 80-360 DEG C, and ground if necessary.
