Abstract
571,271. Electrolysis. FRASCH, J. Sept. 19, 1939, No. 26169. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1938. [Class 41] [Also in Group II] Articles of magnesium and its alloys are protected against corrosion by means of a layer of manganese oxide electro-deposited in an A.C. bath with the articles as electrodes and using chromium and manganese compounds, the cations of manganese being between 30 per cent and 50 per cent by weight of the anions containing chromium. Preferably. 10 per cent chromic, acid solution and 6-10 per cent manganese carbonate are employed, but other manganese compounds may be used, such as the peroxide, or manganese dichromate may provide both kinds. of ions. The pH of the bath is lower than 7, the current-density is 2-12 amps./dm.<2>, the voltage 4-40, and the time 5-15 minutes, at room temperature. The oxide-layer can be treated afterwards in alkaline solution or boiling water, or ca,n be painted, or given a final treatment in a silicate solution. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the protective layer can be imparted chemically and refers to manganese anions and to solutions containing 10 per cent chromic acid and 1-5 per cent manganese carbonate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
