Abstract
571,161. Hoppers. ROBINSON & SON, Ltd., T., and ORMEROD, H. Sept. 28, 1943, No. 15928. [Class 78 (i)] A pivotally mounted and counterbalanced hopper for feeding granular materials tilts when the weight of its contents is below a predetermined amount and renders inoperative one of the gears in the driving train of the discharge mechanism. The hopper a, Fig. 2, is pivoted at b in a larger hopper j which has a discharge roller h and gate k. The roller h is driven from a driving wheel i through gears f, g, the former of which is carried by a member d. This member is pivoted at e and is coupled to the hopper a by the link c. When the weight of material in the hopper is below a predetermined amount, it tilts to the right, and the consequent movement of the member d removes the friction gear f from engagement with the driver i. In a modification the hopper a, Fig. 3, is pivoted at b and connected by a link m to a counterbalanced member n which is pivoted at o and carries the shaft p of the feed wheel r. The shaft p carries also a wheel p<1> which, when the member n turns clock-wise, is put into frictional engagement with a driving wheel q. In a further modification (not shown) the hopper, feed wheel and its driving wheel form a unit which is carried upon a base pivoted to the machine frame.
