Abstract
<PICT:0570999/IV/1> <PICT:0570999/IV/2> A press for removing carbon bisulphide from sodium cellulose xanthate and compacting the latter to remove air therefrom comprises a pair of intermeshing screws 14, 16, the threads of each of which fill the complementary grooves of the other screw at the position where they intermesh, and the said screws are so formed that the volumetric capacity of the grooves gradually decreases from the inlet 26 to the outlet of the press. A solid forming die 28 is positioned closely about the non-intermeshing portions of the screws at the outlet end, and a perforated cover or sleeve 36 is disposed around the screws. In the construction shown, the decrease in volumetric capacity is obtained by decreasing the depth of the grooves, but in a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the depth is maintained constant and the width of the rooves decreases. The die 28 is held in place by bolts 30 and spacing members 32. Screw-operated wedge bars 40 urge the sleeve 36 into contact with the screws. Each screw shaft 18 has a packing gland comprising a flange 50, which is secured to the press frame 22 and has a cavity in which rotates a dip ring or thrower 58. The cavity may be connected to vacuum through opening 60. The casing 12 is air-tight and a vacuum is applied to the carbon bisulphide outlet 34.
