Convention dates, June 3, 1942, and Dec. 12, 1942: [Class 135] In a pressure-regulating valve having inlet, reservoir and accumulator connections and a byepass valve opened when the accumulator pressure exceeds a predetermined value by pressure-responsive means, the said means comprise two valves controlling passages leading from a chamber behind the byepass valve to the reservoir and accumulator connections respectively. As shown in Fig. 1, the regulator valve has a port 25 connected to the delivery of a pump 14, a port 31 connected to an accumulator 20, and a port 52 connected to a reservoir 10. Liquid is byepassed when the constricted portion 58 of a valve 54 allows communication between the port 25 and a bore 50, and when a valve 80 on a plunger 78 allows communication between the bore 50 and port 52. The valve 54 is urged to the right by a spring 56 and by any pressure conveyed from the bore 50 through a passage 104, and to the left by pressure conveyed from the port 31 through a passage 102. A hollow member 84 fitted within the plunger 78 and acted on by a spring 94 has a valve face 86 adapted to seat in an orifice in the plunger, and engages the shank of a fluted member 92, the other end of which engages a ball valve 70 acted on by a spring 72. When the accumulator pressure in the port 31 reaches a predetermined value, the valve 70 closes and the valve 86 opens. Pressure behind the plunger 78 is thus relieved through an aperture 85 and the interior of the member 84 to the port 52, so that pressure in the bore 50 acts on the plunger 78 to establish communication between the bore 50 and the port 52, which is subsequently closed at a predetermined lower accumulator pressure which permits closure of the valve 86 and opening of the valve 70. In a modification, the ball valve 70 is replaced by a poppet-type valve. In a further form, the pump port 120, Fig. 3, is connected to the accumulator port 122 through a passage 126 provided with a check valve 128, and communication with the port 124 connected to the reservoir 10 is controlled by a plunger 148 urged towards the left by a spring 150. A member 154 movable in the plunger has a bore on which a spring-pressed ball 160 is adapted to seat and a passage 156 leading to the bore. A ball 174 is adapted to seat in a bore in a fixed member 142, piston members 162, 170 are interposed between the balls 160, 174 and passages 180, 182, 184 are provided. When the accumulator pressure reaches a predetermined value, the valve 174 is closed and the valve 160 opened, and the plunger 148 is moved to the right owing to the relief of pressure from the chamber between it and the member 142.
